Incorporating topical therapy into a consistent and gentle skin-care routine can improve the overall effectiveness of therapy for rosacea patients, according to an article in The Nurse Practitioner.1
A twice-daily facial care routine is recommended, beginning each morning. Patients should clean their face with a gentle and non-abrasive, non-grainy cleanser. Spread the cleanser with your fingertips, rinse with lukewarm water and blot the face dry with a thick cotton towel. Never pull, tug or use a rough washcloth. A soft natural sponge or shaving brush could be used.
Topical medication can follow after allowing the face to dry thoroughly. Be sure to ask your doctor about how much time to allow between application of rosacea medication and any other topical therapies or additional products you may be using.
Because of their sensitive skin, rosacea sufferers should avoid any skin-care products that sting, burn or cause additional redness, especially those with such ingredients as alcohol, menthol, peppermint, eucalyptus oil, clove oil, witch hazel or certain fragrances.
