Q&A: Itching Disrupts Sleep & Safe Skin-Care Products

Q. I have itching due to rosacea that occurs during the evening and disrupts my sleep. What can I do to alleviate this itching?

A. Sleeping in a room that is too warm often causes itching. A fan or air conditioner may help alleviate this.

The itching also may be caused by overly dry skin or by skin-care products. Avoid rubbing and scratching, which may bring immediate relief but can make matters worse.

You should see your dermatologist, as it may be appropriate to change the products you use on your skin, and a moisturizer might be added. If a skin disorder other than rosacea is the culprit, another medication may resolve the problem.

Q. What methods of exfoliation, dark spot lightening and wrinkle abatement are safe for people with rosacea? I can see the effects of aging on my face but am afraid to use any treatment that would exacerbate my condition.

A. Many rosacea patients have unusually sensitive skin, and in an NRS patient survey exfoliants as well as certain ingredients were identified by many as causing a rosacea flare-up. Your best bet is to ask your dermatologist which, if any, products or procedures are appropriate. It is important to determine what is compatible with your specific condition.
