For many rosacea patients, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a visible impact on their skin, making special care more important than ever. Here are some tips for avoiding flare-ups during these often stressful times.
Stick to routines: “It’s important to stick to your skin care routine, keep your schedule, and maintain the semblance of a normal life, even if you aren’t going to be leaving the house or working like you might normally,” said dermatologist and psychiatrist Dr. Amy Wechsler.
Sleep well: “Sleep patterns play an important role in how we deal with stress too,” added Dr. Wechsler. “So don’t stay up so late if you don’t normally.”
Get outside: Including a daily walk in your routine may be beneficial for maintaining mental health.
Keep in touch: Staying connected with friends and loved ones through video calls, and socially distanced hangouts can also help fight isolation.
Mask properly: “If you have to go out into public, try to always use a new or clean mask.” said Dr. Estee Williams, assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. “Soft, natural materials like cotton are a great fabric choice for rosacea patients.”
Cool off: Prolonged mask-wearing can cause you to overheat, causing your face to flush. Cool off once the mask is off by applying a cold towel or ice pack to your face, chewing ice chips or sipping cold water.
Maintain skin care and medical therapy: With so many variables in our lives right now, it’s important to continue your normal skin care routine and medical therapy. Apply a fragrance-free moisturizer to maintain skin barrier function and reduce the potential for irritation or abrasion from a face mask.
