Some surprises may be welcome during the winter months, but others you want to avoid at all costs -- like rosacea flare-ups. Truth be told, managing rosacea can be especially tricky this time of year, due to many factors. Here are some ways to keep your cool:
- Take care of yourself. Be sure to eat right, rest, exercise, plan sensibly, delegate and leave time to relax. Don't forget to use your "Rosacea Diary" to identify your personal triggers.
- Cover your face. Start with a moisturizer and a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, and wrap up in a scarf to protect your face. Minimize cold and wind exposure, and protect the eyes with glasses or sunglasses.
- Balance indoor heat. Indoor heat can cause flare-ups for many, especially near a stove or fireplace. Hot baths are also a trigger. Avoid hot saunas (especially après ski activities), and be sure to adjust your thermostat and indoor humidifier as the weather changes.
- Avoid your food triggers. Watch out for them especially at social gatherings. Alcohol, spices and heated beverages are common tripwires.
Above all, continue your medical therapy. You'll feel at your best when you try to stick to your normal daily routine.
